Owners of residences in the Town of Angelica will notice a $50.00 special charge for garbage collection on their tax statements.  As the five-year contract we had with Waste Management ends on December 31, 2005, the town had to negotiate a new contract for the pickup and transport of garbage and recyclables and the lowest proposal received, which was from Waste Management, over doubled in cost from what the town paid in 2005.

In the past this service was paid for out of the tax levy which means that all property owners, including those who did not live in the town and those that owned land without a home on it, were contributing towards payment of this service.  The town board felt that the large increase in cost of providing this service should be borne by those who used it, namely the residents of the town.  This special charge for garbage collection will now pay approximately 60 per cent of the total cost of pickup and transporting garbage and recyclables to the landfill in Shawano.  The remainder is paid from the tax levy.

The use of stickers will remain the same.  A 75-cent sticker is required for every bag of garbage or garbage container that is set out for collection.  The fees collected from the sale of stickers pays for about 92 per cent of the garbage tippage fees and recycling fees that the town pays the City of Shawano for every ton of garbage and recyclables that is brought in to the landfill.
